Jaisalmer (the Golden City) is a medieval desert fortress city in western Rajasthan, India, 300 km from Jodhpur. Its 12th-century Sonar Quila fort — one of the world's largest inhabited fortresses — is listed under UNESCO as part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan. The Sam Sand Dunes camel safari and desert camp are 40 km west of the city.
Jaisalmer is one of the world's great desert cities. The fort — Sonar Quila (Golden Fort) — is built entirely of yellow sandstone and glows amber at dusk, as if the desert itself had been folded into architecture. Unlike most forts in India, this one is a living settlement: a quarter of Jaisalmer's population still lives inside its walls, making it one of the world's last inhabited medieval fortresses.
Founded in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, the city grew rich as a trading post on the camel caravan routes between India and Central Asia. The havelis (merchant mansions) built by those traders — particularly Patwon Ki Haveli with its five interconnected palaces — showcase stonework filigree so intricate it barely looks like stone.
The Sam Sand Dunes, 40km west of the city, offer the classic camel safari and overnight desert camp experience: sundowners on a dune crest, folk musicians playing under the stars, and a sunrise that turns the sand orange-gold before the heat builds.

A reservoir built in 1367, lined with temples, ghats, and an ornate gateway. At dawn, the water reflects the fort on the horizon and migratory birds gather on the surface. Hire a rowboat for the best photographic angle.
November to February. Summer temperatures exceed 45°C and the desert becomes genuinely dangerous in June–August. The Desert Festival is held in February — if timing aligns, book it.
Budget camps use basic tents with shared bathrooms. Mid-range add attached bathrooms and AC Swiss tents. Luxury camps offer standalone tented suites with private decks. We recommend mid-range minimum for a comfortable experience.
Several rooftop restaurants inside the fort serve good Rajasthani thalis with views of the city. Try Ker Sangri (desert beans and capers) — a dish specific to this region and unavailable elsewhere.
The lanes inside are confusing — intentionally so, as they were designed to disorient invaders. A guide is essential for your first visit. Our guides also know which lanes have the best artisan workshops.
The nearest airport is Jaisalmer itself (small, limited flights) or Jodhpur (5 hours by road). The overnight train from Jodhpur is excellent — arrive refreshed for a full first day.
