Jodhpur (the Blue City) is Rajasthan's second-largest city, 340 km from Jaipur and 300 km from Jaisalmer. Mehrangarh Fort, which rises 122 metres above the city, is widely considered the most dramatically positioned fort in India. The old city's characteristic blue-painted houses are visible from the fort's ramparts.

The Fortress Above a Sea of Blue

Mehrangarh Fort is arguably the most impressive fortress in India. It rises 122 metres above Jodhpur on a sheer rock outcrop, its walls up to 36 metres thick in places. From its ramparts, the entire city spreads below — a dense fabric of blue-painted houses that gives Jodhpur its nickname. The fort's museum holds the finest collection of Rajput armour, howdahs, and royal costumes in existence.

The blue colour is traditionally associated with Brahmins, who painted their homes to signal their caste status. Over centuries, the practice spread throughout the old city until the colour became inseparable from Jodhpur's identity. Walking the lanes below the fort at dawn, when the light is cool and the streets quiet, is one of the great travel experiences in India.

Umaid Bhawan Palace, completed in 1943 and still the private residence of the royal family, is now part-hotel and part-museum. Its Art Deco architecture is a striking contrast to the medieval sandstone of the fort. The hotel's afternoon tea is one of the finest in Rajasthan.

Jodhpur sits between Jaipur and Jaisalmer on the standard Rajasthan circuit — making it a natural overnight stop rather than a day trip. One night minimum; two nights recommended.

Must Visit

Mehrangarh Fort

One of India's largest and most magnificently preserved forts. The museum inside is world-class — carved palanquins, miniature paintings, and a howdah once used to transport Maharajas on elephant back. The audio guide (narrated by a member of the royal family) is exceptional.

Heritage Hotel

Umaid Bhawan Palace

Built 1929–1943 as a famine-relief project employing 3,000 workers. The palace's Art Deco interior — murals, marble halls, indoor swimming pool — is unlike anything in Rajasthan. Visit the museum wing even if you're not staying; the history of the Jodhpur royal family is extraordinary.

Memorial

Jaswant Thada

The royal cenotaph built in 1899 of translucent white marble — so thin it glows orange-pink when backlit at sunset. Set in gardens with Mehrangarh Fort as the backdrop, it is one of the most photogenic spots in Jodhpur. Essentially uncrowded compared to the fort itself.

Food & Markets

Clock Tower & Sardar Market

Jodhpur's lively old-town market beneath a Victorian clock tower. Spices, textiles, silver jewellery, and the famous Mawa Kachori (deep-fried pastry filled with sweetened condensed milk). The best street food in the city is concentrated in a 200-metre radius here.

Jodhpur Visitor Tips

  • 📷
    Best photo spot

The rooftop of any café in the Navchokiya neighbourhood below the fort. Arrive at 7am — golden hour light, empty lanes, and the fort looming above. Stepwell Toorji Ka Jhalra is also spectacular for sunrise photography.

  • 🌙
    Fort light-and-sound show

Mehrangarh Fort runs an evening sound-and-light show (seasonal). Check current schedule when booking — it is one of the best in Rajasthan and makes for a memorable first evening.

  • 🍲
    Where to eat

Indique restaurant at the fort has spectacular views and good Rajasthani cuisine. For something local and unpretentious, any of the thali places around Sardar Market will feed you well for ₹150–200.

  • 👗
    Shopping

Jodhpur is known for antiques, furniture, and silver. Tripolia Bazaar for silver, Mochi Bazaar for shoes. Be aware that the "antique" market is largely reproduction — genuine antiques require an export permit.

  • 🚘
    Getting there

Jodhpur has an airport with direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur. By road, it is 5–6 hours from Jaipur and 5–6 hours from Jaisalmer — ideal as the midpoint on a Rajasthan circuit.
