Collected from the airport and taken to your hotel. The rest of the evening is yours. Tomorrow: Old Delhi.
A full day in Delhi: the sensory overload of Old Delhi's lanes and the Mughal grandeur of the Red Fort and Jama Masjid in the morning; the sweeping monuments of New Delhi (Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar, India Gate) in the afternoon. Two utterly different cities, one day.
An early start pays off. The Taj Mahal at sunrise, pale marble against a pale sky, the long reflecting pool still and almost no one else around, is a completely different experience to the midday crowds. Your guide will position you exactly right and tell you the story of Shah Jahan's obsession with building something eternal. Then Agra Fort and the Mughal palace complex. By afternoon, you're on the road via Fatehpur Sikri — a complete walled Mughal city abandoned in 1585, its main gateway standing taller than a 15-storey building.
Drive from Agra to Ranthambore through Rajasthan's wide landscape. Check in to your jungle lodge, which sits on the edge of the national park. In the evening, your naturalist guide will brief you on what to look for tomorrow — which zones the tigers have been using, and where the recent tracks have been spotted. Early night. Tomorrow starts before dawn.
The morning Jeep safari starts at gate opening, when the big cats are still active from their nighttime hunting and the light is extraordinary for photography. Your naturalist scans the dry lake beds and forest edges where tigers walk. Mid-morning back to the lodge for breakfast and rest through the hottest hours. The afternoon safari covers different zones, often with better sightings as the animals move toward the water. Ranthambore has over 70 tigers. On two safaris, the odds are very much in your favour.
Drive from Ranthambore to Jaipur: a two-hour journey that moves you from tiger country to royal Rajasthan. Jaipur rewards a leisurely evening. The old city walls are illuminated at dusk, and the rooftop restaurants overlooking the Hawa Mahal are worth lingering in.
A full morning in Jaipur: Amber Fort perched on its hill with its 953-window Hawa Mahal, the ornate City Palace, and the astronomical wonder of Jantar Mantar. Then the bazaars: gems, block-print textiles, blue pottery. Afternoon drive back to Delhi for your onward flight, or fly direct from Jaipur if it works better for your routing.
